INDONESIA

Come 17 October 2019, Indonesia will be implementing compulsory halal certification, after five years since the passing of the Halal Product Assurance Law (Law No. 33/2014). This law stipulates that it’s an obligation and mandatory to obtain a halal certificate for all actors that produce goods. For those who disagree with marking their products with the halal label, their choice is to merely declare their products and goods as non-halal (impermissible) products.

It means there are only two categories of commodities and products in Indonesia: halal (permissible) and non-halal or haram (impermissible). In Indonesia, with only about 20% of products permissible for Muslims to consume are currently labelled halal and 1.5 million (F&B) companies requiring halal certification, valued at least USD$1.6 Billion, the government and religious authorities needed a solution to connect numerous complex sectors in the supply chain, simplification and streamlining of the administrative roadblocks and a swift and coordinated implementation before the deadline in October 2022.
